  • Highlights - entry point Ypres Salient

In these entry points along the Ypres Salient 'Today's landscape is shown as a witness of the past'. The frontline around Ypres - Ypres Salient - is outlined by some particular differences in altitude. During this tour you view Ypres from these meaningful places in the landscape. 100 years after the Great War, the landscape is the only witness of this huge conflict. There are 3 entry points:

North located in the reconstructed farm Klein Zwaanhof sheds light on the Second Battle of Ypres of Pilkem Ridge. From this farm you can make a short walk to Yorkshire Trench, a restaured British trenchsystem. Passing by some smaller cemeteries you arrive at entry point East, next to Hooge Crater Museum, where Bellewaarde Ridge is clarified. The tour goes then further to the valuable site Hill 60 and the huge Caterpillar Crater. Entry point South is located in the provincial domain 'De Palingbeek' and offers an insight in the underground war of Hill 60 and St Elooi. De Palingbeek can only be visited in the 4 hour tour.

  • Basic Northern Salient

During the tour  we get acquainted with the Gas Attack of 1915. We explore the area of Passendale where the allied troops launched - in inhumane circumstances - an attack on the German lines in 1917. To start we visit Essex Farm Cemetery and the restaured Dressing Station where John McCrae worked and wrote his famous poem 'In Flanders Fields. After that we visit the frontline and take a peek at the Yorkshire Trench and Dug-out. A unique opportunity to stroll through a trench. Passing by the German Cemetery in Langemark we arrive at the largest british cemetery Tyne Cot in Passendale. Via Zonnebeke and the French Cemetery Saint Charles de Potyze we return to Ypres.

  • Basic Southern Salient

The more Southern part of the frontline is landscape-wise a lot more interesting and passes through a part of the green West-Flemish Hills. We visit first Hill 60, the last pieces of authentic battlefield in Flanders. We see the results of several mine explosions. We pursue our tour and look for remains of the attack on June 7th 1917, when 17 deep mines exploded. The Peace Tower in the Irish Parc of Mesen is a beacon in the landscape which will remember the sacrifice of the Irish people, Catholics as well as Protestants. Passing by the Kemmelberg where the 'Kaiserschlacht' took place in april 1918, we return to Ypres.
